Bushmills Black Bush Review

Bushmills Black Bush bottle

The Verdict

4.0/ 5

Rated 4.0 out of 5 Highly Recommended

Sherried Fruity Rich

Best for

Drinkers who want a rich, sherry-cask-driven Irish whiskey to sip neat or on the rocks, and who are looking for an accessible introduction to sherried whisky styles. Less suited to those who mainly drink with water, mizuwari-style, or in a highball, where it loses much of its character.

Quick Verdict

Bushmills Black Bush is a rich, malt-forward Blended Irish Whiskey with genuine Oloroso sherry cask character — sweet dried fruit, honey, vanilla, citrus, warm spice and wood come together in a smooth, easy-drinking package, and the 40% ABV brings smoothness rather than any real bite. It performs excellently neat, with very little alcohol heat, and holds up just as well on the rocks, though a light bitterness lingers in the finish. Where it comes up short is versatility: dilution-based serves like a splash of water or a highball noticeably flatten its richness, so this is a whisky best enjoyed neat or over ice rather than mixed.

Bottle Information

Bushmills Black Bush is a Blended Irish Whiskey from Old Bushmills Distillery, in Bushmills, County Antrim, Northern Ireland (part of the United Kingdom); the "Irish Whiskey" designation covers the whole island of Ireland. It's an exceptionally high-malt blend of malt and grain Irish whiskeys, matured in former Oloroso Sherry and Bourbon casks, with no age statement. It's bottled at 40% ABV. The distillery is currently owned by Proximo Spirits (part of the Beckmann family's Becle group, also the owner of Jose Cuervo), having previously been owned by Diageo before a 2014 ownership change.

Tasting Review

Black Bush leans on an exceptionally high proportion of malt whiskey and genuine Oloroso sherry cask maturation to set itself apart from Bushmills’ own entry-level blends. I drink it neat most of the time for reviews, and this is one where neat is clearly the strongest way to have it — it also holds up well on the rocks, though it loses a lot of its character once diluted with water or soda. For more from this category, see our Jameson review for a lighter, more classic style of blended Irish whiskey, or Bushmills Single Malt 10 Year for the distillery’s own single malt take.

Tasting Notes

Nose
Fruity and sweet, with dried fruit, apple and spice.
Palate
Gentle and smooth, sweet and easy to drink, with vanilla, honey, dried fruit, citrus, spice and wood.
Finish
Fruity, with a warm spiciness and a hint of bitterness fading out.

Flavor Profile

  • Fruit 4 / 5
  • Spice 3 / 5

Pros

  • Genuine Oloroso sherry cask richness — dried fruit, honey and vanilla sweetness with real complexity for a blended whiskey at this price.
  • Performs excellently neat, with very little alcohol heat, and holds up just as well on the rocks.

Cons

  • No major liquid-level weaknesses stood out in the neat tasting — the main limitation is that it doesn't perform as well diluted (with water, mizuwari-style or as a highball) as it does neat or on the rocks, which is a matter of serve versatility rather than a flaw in the liquid itself.

Final Verdict

Bushmills Black Bush earns Highly Recommended on the strength of its neat performance — sweet dried fruit, honey, vanilla, citrus, warm spice and wood come together in a smooth, well-balanced package, and at 40% ABV the whisky reads as smooth rather than thin, with barely any distracting alcohol heat. A light bitterness lingers through the finish, and the body itself isn't especially heavy, but neither gets in the way of what is a genuinely rich, sherry-led drinking experience. Its main limitation is versatility rather than quality — a splash of water, mizuwari-style dilution or a highball all noticeably flatten that richness, so this isn't a whisky suited to every serving style. This 4.0 reflects the neat liquid alone; it's also worth noting that Black Bush offers strong value for the price, delivering a richness that a lot of bottles at this level don't manage. Neither that value nor its price factor into the score itself — judged purely as a glass of whisky, it's a well-made, sherry-forward blend that rewards drinking it neat or over ice specifically.

Other Ways to Drink It

Dram Verdict's core Nose, Palate, Finish and Score above are tasted neat. These are Kaz's notes on other ways he's actually tried this bottle.

  • With Water

    Fair

Body isn't especially strong, so a full 1:1 pour makes the water feel excessive — a few drops instead brings out more fruitiness.

  • On the Rocks

    Very Good

Fruitiness comes to the front while sweetness and other flavors become more restrained, without turning astringent.

  • Highball

    Good

Tasty, but the rich character it has neat and on the rocks largely disappears when mixed with soda.
