Chivas Regal Extra 13 Year Sherry Cask Review

Chivas Regal Extra 13 Year Old Sherry Cask bottle

The Verdict

3.8/ 5

Rated 3.8 out of 5 Good

Smooth Sweet Balanced

Best for

Fans of the classic Chivas style who want a little extra richness, and anyone after an easy, well-balanced blend for highballs or the rocks. Less suited to drinkers who want a pronounced sherry-cask profile or a characterful neat pour.

Quick Verdict

Chivas Regal Extra 13 Sherry Cask is a smooth, sweet, well-balanced blended Scotch — honey, orange, dried fruit and apple over the familiar Chivas style — with only a light touch of sherry cask. Neat, it's easy but not especially exciting; over ice and as a highball it's at its best.

Tasting Review

This review covers Chivas Regal Extra 13 Sherry Cask, the sherry-cask bottling in Chivas Regal’s Extra 13 range, not one of the other cask versions. Only a portion of the blend has been matured in Oloroso sherry casks, so the sherry is one layer within a Chivas blend rather than the whole story. I tasted it neat first, then with water, over ice and as a highball.

In the glass it’s recognizably Chivas. The sherry influence is there, but it’s restrained: it adds a layer of richness to the house style rather than taking over. The grain is fairly firm and the sweetness sits up front, which gives it a sweet, bright impression, and it’s smooth with no rough edges. The body isn’t especially strong, but the balance is good and it feels well made. Neat, it’s easy to drink but not especially exciting — it really comes into its own over ice and as a highball.

It suits anyone who likes the classic Chivas style and wants a little more richness, and drinkers looking for an easy, well-balanced blend for highballs or the rocks. If you want a pronounced sherry-cask profile, this isn’t it. For another everyday blended Scotch, see my Johnnie Walker Black Label review. At The Whisky Exchange it was £36.25 for 70cl when checked on October 2, 2026; any price shown is a current-market reference and may change. For more, browse our Blended Scotch reviews.

Tasting Notes

Nose
Soft and gentle, with no alcohol heat — grain sweetness, honey, orange, dried fruit and gentle oak.
Palate
Little alcohol bite and a light touch of sherry cask: honey, apple, pear, dried fruit, nuts, spice and oak.
Finish
On the short side, with warming spice and sweetness.

Flavor Profile

  • Sweetness 4 / 5
  • Fruit 3 / 5
  • Spice 3 / 5
  • Oak 2 / 5
  • Smoke / Peat 0 / 5
  • Body 2 / 5

Pros

  • Smooth and easy, with very little alcohol bite and no rough edges.
  • Well balanced — the familiar Chivas style with an added layer of richness.
  • Mixes very well: excellent as a highball and very good over ice.

Cons

  • Neat, it's easy but not especially exciting, and the sherry influence is restrained — drinkers expecting a pronounced sherried profile may find it too gentle.

Final Verdict

Extra 13 Sherry Cask keeps the Chivas house style front and center and adds a layer of richness: grain sweetness, honey, orange, dried fruit and apple, smooth and free of rough edges, with good balance. The sherry influence is restrained, the body is fairly light and the finish is on the short side, so neat it's easy to enjoy but not especially exciting. It comes into its own mixed — an excellent highball and very good over ice — but skip a full 1:1 with water.

Other Ways to Drink It

Dram Verdict's core Nose, Palate, Finish and Score above are tasted neat. These are Kaz's notes on other ways he's actually tried this bottle.

  • With Water

    Fair

The sweetness and fruit still come through, but the body turns thin and it falls flat. With only a small splash, the spice runs ahead of the sweetness and the balance suffers.

  • On the Rocks

    Very Good

Both the sweetness and the spice on the finish grow stronger, but it stays easy to drink and well balanced.

  • Highball

    Excellent

No harsh sherry-cask notes come through, and the blend's easy integration shines. Fresh, with a calm dried-fruit note on the finish and good balance.
