This review covers Johnnie Walker Black Ruby, a separate no-age-statement blend — not a version of the 12-year-old Black Label. Johnnie Walker says it uses whisky matured in “PX/Oloroso seasoned red wine casks and bourbon casks”, but in the glass it isn’t sherry-led: the casks feel balanced, with no single one taking over. I tasted it neat first, then with water, over ice and as a highball.
The basic Johnnie Walker character is still there, including a soft thread of smoke, but Black Ruby pushes toward sweetness and fruit — caramel, apple, raisin, berries and plum — with a leathery note, herbs and a spicy, slightly bitter finish. The body is light, which makes it easy for almost anyone, but neat the spice and youthfulness stand out and it feels a little lacking in substance. Compared with Black Label 12, I find Black Label better balanced and more satisfying, while Black Ruby is the fruitier and more complex of the two.
It suits drinkers who want a sweeter, fruitier Johnnie Walker and mostly drink their whisky with water or soda. If you mainly drink neat, or want smoke and weight, Double Black or Black Label make more sense. At The Whisky Exchange it was £34.95 for 70cl when checked on October 2, 2026; any price shown is a current-market reference and may change. For more, browse our Blended Scotch reviews.
