Woodford Reserve Distiller’s Select bottle

The Verdict

4.3/ 5

Rated 4.3 out of 5 Highly Recommended

Balanced Oaky Elegant

Best for

Drinkers who want a refined, easy-drinking bourbon that still has depth, and anyone who mixes bourbon highballs or cocktails at home. Less suited to drinkers looking for a big, punchy, high-proof style.

Quick Verdict

Woodford Reserve Distiller's Select is an elegant, well-balanced Kentucky bourbon — vanilla, orange, spice, dried fruit and dark chocolate with clear oak but no bitterness or heaviness — and it's easy to drink neat. It's integrated rather than bold, with a fairly reserved nose. It also makes an excellent highball and cocktail base.

Tasting Review

This review covers Woodford Reserve’s core Kentucky straight bourbon. I reviewed the 43.2% bottling sold in Japan (750ml) — the same strength as the 70cl Distiller’s Select sold in the UK. The current US bottling is 45.2% ABV (90.4 proof), so the American bottle is a little stronger than the one reviewed here. I tasted it neat first, then with water, over ice and as a highball.

It’s an elegant, well-balanced bourbon. The oak is clearly there, but without bitterness or heaviness, and there’s very little alcohol bite, so it’s easy to drink while still tasting rich and layered — vanilla, orange, spice, dried fruit and dark chocolate on a gentle palate. It’s medium-bodied rather than heavy, and it stays interesting glass after glass. The trade-off is intensity: everything is well integrated rather than bold, and the nose is fairly reserved. Woodford Reserve also works exceptionally well as a cocktail base. Its body and balance give a mixed drink enough structure, so the finished drink stays balanced, while the bourbon’s own oak, sweetness and spice remain clearly present rather than disappearing behind the other ingredients. It supports a cocktail without taking it over — one of its real strengths as a bartender’s whisky.

It suits drinkers who want a refined, easy bourbon that still has depth, and anyone mixing highballs or bourbon cocktails at home. If you want more punch and weight, Knob Creek 9 is the bolder bottle; for a lighter, sweeter everyday pour, see Buffalo Trace. At The Whisky Exchange it was £36.75 for 70cl when checked on October 5, 2026; any price shown is a current-market reference and may change. For more, browse our Bourbon reviews.

Flavor Profile

  • Sweetness 3 / 5
  • Fruit 3 / 5
  • Spice 3 / 5
  • Oak 4 / 5
  • Smoke / Peat 0 / 5
  • Body 3 / 5

Pros

  • Balanced and refined — vanilla, orange, spice, dried fruit and dark chocolate in good proportion.
  • Clear oak character without bitterness or heaviness, and very little alcohol bite.
  • Excellent highball and cocktail versatility — enough body and flavor presence to stay recognizably Woodford Reserve after mixing, without overpowering the drink.

Cons

  • Well integrated rather than bold — it doesn't have much punch, and the nose is fairly reserved.

Final Verdict

Woodford Reserve Distiller's Select is a refined, balanced bourbon: the oak is clearly present but never bitter or heavy, the alcohol stays in the background, and vanilla, orange, spice, dried fruit and dark chocolate come through on a gentle, layered palate. It's easy to drink without being dull. What it doesn't have is punch — everything is well integrated rather than bold, and the nose is fairly reserved. Neat, it's very good; as a highball it's excellent, and over ice it's good if you don't mind a little more bitterness. Keep water to a small splash. Its body and balance also make it an excellent cocktail base: mixed drinks stay balanced, and its own oak, sweetness and spice remain recognizable.

Other Ways to Drink It

Dram Verdict's core Nose, Palate, Finish and Score above are tasted neat. These are Kaz's notes on other ways he's actually tried this bottle.

  • With Water

    Fair

At a full 1:1 it gets too blurred. Keep it to a small splash of water.

  • On the Rocks

    Good

The fruit comes up nicely and it's tasty, but the bitterness increases too, so it may divide opinion.

  • Highball

    Excellent

Lightly bitter, with a crisp, clean and refreshing finish.
