Arran 10 Year Review

Arran 10 Year Old bottle

The Verdict

4.2/ 5

Rated 4.2 out of 5 Highly Recommended

Fruity Balanced Satisfying

Best for

Newcomers and seasoned drinkers alike who want a fruity, balanced single malt with some weight — neat, with water, on the rocks or in a highball. Less suited to those looking for smoke or a sherry-forward style.

Quick Verdict

Arran 10 Year Old is a fruity, well-balanced Island single malt, with honey, green apple, Earl Grey, citrus and herbs on a powerful nose and a gentle, fruit-led palate of green apple, melon, spice, malt and a touch of salt. It's satisfying and has almost nothing to fault, though a slight alcohol sting shows neat, and it's more a complete all-rounder than a deeply complex, distinctive malt.

Tasting Review

Arran 10 is a well-rounded Island single malt — the kind of whisky I’d call an honour student. The nose is powerful and slightly sweet, with honey, green apple, Earl Grey, citrus and herbs, while the palate is fruit-led and gentle, less sweet than the nose suggests, with melon, spice, malt and a touch of salinity. Neat there’s a slight alcohol sting, but it comes with real satisfaction rather than harshness. Overall it’s balanced and very hard to find fault with; it’s less a deep, idiosyncratic malt than a very complete one.

It’s versatile, too, holding up with water, on the rocks and especially as a highball. Prices in Japan spiked for a while when it was hard to find, but they’ve since settled, and I think it’s good value again. My Talisker 10 review covers another single malt from the Islands. Final Verdict

Arran 10 Year Old is about as complete as an all-round single malt gets. Neat, the nose is powerful and slightly sweet — honey, green apple, Earl Grey, citrus and herbs — and the palate is fruit-led and gentle, less sweet than the nose, with green apple, melon, spice, malt, citrus and a salty note, before a sweet, fruity finish with light spice and bitterness at moderate length. The balance is very good, and it has real satisfaction while staying easy to drink. Its limits are modest: a slight alcohol sting shows neat, the finish is only moderate, and it reads as a balanced all-rounder rather than a deeply complex or distinctive malt. Judged purely on the liquid, it's a very well-made single malt that's easy to recommend.
